Robotic DaVinci Surgery

An estimated 1/3 of women will have a hysterectomy by age 60. A hysterectomy involves the surgical removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and/or ovaries. The approach can be done invasively, as in open abdominally or vaginally, or laparoscopically, which is minimally-invasive.

Minimally-invasive da Vinci Surgery is a surgical option for management of common gynecological conditions such as:

  • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding
  • Uterine Fibroids
  • Adenomyosis
  • Endometriosis
  • Chronic Pelvic Pain
  • Ovarian Cysts and Masses
  • Prolapse

Such conditions may cause no symptoms, but most cause common symptoms which include:

  • Pelvic Pain
  • Heavy and/or Irregular Menstruation
  • Fatigue due to Anemia
  • Pain with Intercourse
  • Decreased fertility or Infertility

While some symptoms can be managed with use of hormones, others require surgical management, including hysterectomy. Using the da Vinci System, 3-4 small incisions are made in the abdomen, laparoscopic pelvic sugary is performed through these incisions, and ultimately, the uterus and any other pelvic organs are extracted through the vagina.

Benefits include:

  • Decreased Blood Loss
  • Decreased Post-Op Pain
  • Reduced Hospital Stay
  • Improved Healing Time

Dr. Barton has been performing this surgery since 2013 and prefers this approach for her patients. She has watched patients recover from invasive hysterectomies versus minimally-invasive hysterectomies and the observations are astounding. Her patients that have had the da Vinci-assisted hysterectomy have less post-op pain than patients recovering from an open approach, and thus, recover quicker and heal faster. Nonetheless, surgery does carry risks, which include bleeding, infection, and/or damage to internal organs. However, studies show that such risks are reduced with the da Vinci system.
